If Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn were given the keys to Downing Street at the next election, the average annual household bill for gas and electricity would soar to a shocking £2,000 – according to analysis released today.
Croydon’s 160,000 households would have to pay an estimated £287 each to fund Jeremy Corbyn and Sarah Jones’s planned £7.8 billion nationalisation of the National Grid.
They would also have to pay £242 extra a year to adopt the German-style energy system that they have promised.
And the infrastructure needed to meet Labour’s renewable energy plans would add another £760 to annual bills.
Energy Minister Claire Perry MP has rightly warned: “This research has shown what we’ve long suspected – Labour are making an impossible promise on energy, and would raise bills by almost £2,000 for every family in the country.
“Corbyn’s plans would achieve nothing, leaving our country’s energy security precariously weak and hitting hardworking families and businesses with soaring bills.
“The Conservatives have capped the amount people are paying for their energy, while reducing emissions faster than any other G20 country and continuing to grow our economy.”
Mario Creatura, Parliamentary Candidate for Croydon Central, commented: "Yesterday the Conservatives capped the amount people in Croydon are paying for their energy, and today we learn that our Labour MP intends on hugely increasing gas and electricity bills.
“Since 2014 her Labour friends running Croydon Council have increased Council Tax by a record 17 per cent, and last year they used it to increase their own pay by a shocking 6 per cent.
“Sarah Jones wants residents in Croydon to pay more money to heat our homes – it’s unwanted and unnecessary. She should get behind the Government's plans to help the cost of living for everyone locally, instead of dreaming up more ways to tax our hardworking residents."
