Mario Creatura has warmly welcomed the news that Croydon has been awarded £61m to build Council homes in our Borough.
Earlier this year the Conservative Government gave the Mayor of London a record £3.15 billion to get London Councils building more that 11,000 new Council homes across our city. Croydon has received £61m which will provide hundreds of new housing units.
This is great news for Croydon residents and for those in desperate need of housing. The Council has already confirmed that all of the properties built from this grant will be added to the current stock of Council owned properties and they will therefore attract the Right to Buy. This is therefore likely to offer families a first step up to owning their own property which is an ambition for so many of them.
What I would really like to see is family council houses being built with this money. That is what residents tell me they wish to have and by working alongside established communities, there should be some excellent opportunities to deliver new family houses in the most appropriate places across our borough.
Croydon's Labour-run Council has been in power for four years now, and to date has not laid a single brick despite pledging to build thousands of affordable and Council houses in the borough.
