Yesterday the House of Commons held a debate to discuss the dire financial situation that Croydon's Labour-run Council has inflicted on our borough.
Called by David Simmonds MP, the discussion took the form of an 'adjournment debate' which happens at the end of the business of the day.
Chris Philp, Conservative MP for Croydon South, was present as was Elliot Colburn, Conservative MP for neighbouring Carshalton and Wallington.
Sadly neither Steve Reed, Labour MP for Croydon North, nor his colleague Sarah Jones, Labour MP for Croydon Central, chose not to attend.
Croydon Council is £1.5 billion in debt. It's sacking potential hundreds of staff and cutting vital services. They're planning on closing down many of our libraries, shutting recycling centres, increasing taxes and cutting support for the most vulnerable in our town. It is no exaggeration to say it's the single biggest crisis facing our town in recent years - and will potentially take decades to be fixed. Yet Steve and Sarah chose not to give it the time and attention it deserved yesterday.
They are elected to represent their residents - and purely on that measure last night they failed their many constituents.
What is the point of having a Member of Parliament if they do not represent their community when the chips are down?
