Next Saturday marks the third anniversary since the heartbreaking Croydon tram crash. A tragedy that claimed the lives of seven local people and injured more than 60 others.
For three years the families have shown a strength few of us can imagine. They have been tireless in their pursuit of justice – justice rightly owed to them.
The news today from the police that no criminal charges will be brought against the tram driver or any of the companies involved in the crash will cut through our local community.
In circumstances where no equipment failed it seems inconceivable that none of the people involved has been held to account for an avoidable tragedy. The families have rightly called for a coroner’s inquiry and it’s important to note that other avenues of prosecution are still open.
In December 2017 the Rail Accident Investigation Branch made 15 recommendations to improve tram safety. Some have still not been enacted. The slow implementation of these vital safety measures is simply not acceptable. Those responsible must redouble their efforts to ensure this never happens again.
Our community needs justice and it needs closure so that it can heal. I will do all in my power to help them in their pursuit of peace.
