I’m delighted that as a direct result of pressure from our community and local councillors that Croydon Council have halted their plans to build on the green space at Freelands Avenue.
Croydon’s Labour-run Council had wanted to build on green spaces on Monks Hill and other parts of Selsdon – including 10 extra properties on Freelands Avenue. Anyone familiar with the area knows that concreting over our green spaces, especially an area that was used for community activities, was never going to be acceptable to local residents.
Nearly 1,500 local people signed a petition started by Cllr Helen Pollard. That community support combined with convincing arguments managed to persuade Croydon Council to drop their plans to build on the precious green spaces in our local area.
At the urging of local Conservative councillors, the Council has also promised to investigate contributing to enhancing the playground at Edgecoombe and contributing to the planned community facilities at the church. I know the local councillors will keep residents apprised of these welcome developments.
