Huge thanks to the Rt Hon Priti Patel MP for taking time out of her busy schedule to come last night to speak to so many from Croydon’s Indian community.
Priti was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2010, rising swiftly up the ranks and was made the first Indian-origin woman member of the British Cabinet in 2016, when she was appointed Secretary of State for International Development.
As a Gujarati woman whose parents were immigrants from Uganda, she shares the same background thousands of other second generation men and women in Britain. She didn’t go to Oxbridge - she studied economics at Keele University - and her parents set up a series of newsagents. Her story of achievement, and sheer determination, is one that resonated with so many who attended the meeting.
The passion of the local Indian community to improve our town was palpable. Over the coming years I’m truly looking forward to working with them to make Croydon a great place for us all to live and work.
