A letter to Sarah Jones, Labour MP for Croydon Central.
Dear Sarah,
Next week you’re going to be asked to take an important decision on behalf of our friends and neighbours in Croydon. As the local MP I would like to know where you stand on the biggest issue facing our country today.
In June 2016 people up and down the UK gave a clear instruction to the Government and to Parliamentarians that we should leave the European Union. I respect that result and believe we should leave the EU.
That’s why I think all talk of a second EU referendum is deeply concerning. Not only would it re-open divisions within our communities, but it would destroy the fragile faith left in our democratic systems.
What would it say to our neighbours, many of whom voted for the first time in that election, for the establishment to tell them to vote again? That we need a do-over to secure a different outcome? That they got it wrong?
I have tried to learn where you stand on a second referendum, but I can’t find your position on this anywhere.
Your fellow Labour MP in Croydon, Steve Reed, has come out in favour of a second referendum. Many of the Labour councillors in Croydon back a second referendum too – or stopping Brexit entirely.
Would you please be willing to let me know what your view is?
Like many of your Labour colleagues in Croydon and in Parliament, do you back a second referendum?
My position is clear, yours should be too.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes for 2019,
Mario Creatura
